Physiotherapy

Lindsay_Harris_PhysiotherapyPhysiotherapy is the assessment and treatment of joints, muscles, ligaments and nerves that make up the musculoskeletal system. A dysfunction of one or more of these structures can produce pain and discomfort in areas of the body.

The aim of physiotherapy is to enhance the body's natural healing process using techniques such as:

  • Joint and soft tissue mobilisation
  • Electrotherapy
  • Rehabilitation and strengthening
  • Acupuncture

Some common conditions that are treated with physiotherapy are:

  • Back/neck pain
  • Headaches
  • Tennis/golfers elbow
  • Knee pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Acute sprains/sports injuries
  • Sciatica
  • Repetitive and overuse injuries
  • Post operation rehabilitation
  • Osteoarthritis

Our physiotherapists are chartered and recognised by private insurance companies.

Acupuncture

AcupunctureAcupuncture is the use of fine needles inserted into specific meridians or tender points on the body.

It facilitates muscle relaxation and promotes the release of the body's natural pain relieving chemical (endorphine).

Acupuncture compliments physiotherapy well as a form of pain relief and to restore the body's natural balance of energy.

All the needles are single use and individually packaged and sterile.

Our physiotherapists have undertaken postgraduate qualifications and are members of the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (AACP).

Sports Massage

Sports MassageSports massage therapy is an invaluable resource for all sports people, from the occasional tennis player to the professional athlete. It aids the rehabilitation process from sports related injuries and focuses on returning the patient to their sporting activity as quickly and safely as possible. It will help to prevent further injury and offers advise on how to avoid re-injuring a previously damaged area.

Sports massage therapy does not only deal with sports injuries but also helps to enhance an athlete's performance. Pre and post event massage can help to prevent injury as well as help the body to achieve its full potential, keep the muscles healthy and strong and invigorate and enliven tired lethargic muscles.

It is also ideal as part of a training program to maximise potential, maintain flexibility and suppleness, prevent injury, remove knots, adhesions and tension and ease muscular cramp and spasm.

Sports massage can:

  • Prevent Injury
  • Speed up recovery and rehabilitation from injury
  • Improve muscle tone and function
  • Improve performance
  • Decrease muscular pain

Therapeutic Massage

Therapeutic MassageThis is a Holistic approach to massage aimed to relax both the body and the mind. It aids the flow of blood and lymph around the body, which can benefit the circulatory, digestive, nervous, and lymphatic systems. It releases tension in the body and helps to relieve stress, working deep into the muscles and soft tissue.

The increase in the circulation of blood and lymph around the body increases the speed of transport of waste products out of the body and the speed of transport of oxygen and nutrients to the muscles and other organs.

As massage is applied directly to the skin it will offer substantial benefit to its growth and repair. The increased blood supply that massage encourages helps to cleanse the skin. Massage can also improve the function of the sebaceous and sweat glands that lubricate and cool the skin. Massage will also help to soften the skin and improve its suppleness.

Massage, the action of touch, releases 'endorphins' - the body's natural pain relief mechanism and helps to kick start the healing process

Neurological Physiotherapy

Banstead-Physio-and-Therapies-Neurological-Physiotherapy

Neurological physiotherapy is the treatment of patients who have a neurological disorder. Neurological disorders are those affecting the brain, spinal cord and nerves.

These can include:

  • Stroke
  • MS
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Motor Neuron Disease
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Guillian Barr Syndrome
  • Head Injury

Banstead Physio & Therapies can provide physiotherapy assessments and treatment in the comfort of your own home.  This service is often utilised by patients that have difficulty attending the clinic and those that may be experiencing difficulty performing everyday tasks at home.  This could be getting in and out of bed, in and out of chairs, up and down stairs, lack confidence to walk outside on their own and those that require assistance with everyday activities such as washing and dressing.

By seeing you in your own home, the physiotherapist will be able to witness the problems that you are experiencing with everyday activities.  From this your physiotherapist can advise on walking aids and / or home adaptations to enable you to regain or retain your independence and increase your quality of life.

If you would like to find out more, please contact us and we can arrange a physiotherapist to contact you to discuss your personal needs.
Home visits start at £60.00 for an hour assessment which includes a fee for the physiotherapists travelling time.

Functional Movement Screening

Functional Movement

How does it differ from a traditional physiotherapy session?

Traditionally physiotherapy assessments have been based around analysing length, strength and range of movement in muscles and joints in order to diagnose a problem that has been causing pain for an individual. A functional movement screen is undertaken normally in the absence of pain or injury and is used to determine areas of weakness or poor flexibility that are likely to result in injury or pain if left untreated.

Whilst traditional physiotherapy assessments give us useful information it does not tell us in detail how somebody moves in the sporting setting. A functional movement screen is sports specific and tells us unique aspects of how an individual moves.

Using a functional assessment allows us as physiotherapists to analyse the control athletes have over their movement. It involves examining the athlete’s performing movements with the entire body (just like in sport) in order to uncover imbalances, weaknesses and asymmetries. Unlike all other modes of assessment, functional screening highlights subtle and often not so subtle defaults with athlete’s co-ordination, balance and control. Through highlighting these issues we can then design a specific and individual programme for each athlete that compliments their training.

Functional Movement Screens are proving more and more popular and have been used in the elite sporting arena for many years with the likes of the LTA, premier football clubs and Olympic teams all being signed up to have movements screens performed. Today movement screens are accessible and affordable for non elite runners and athletes and enable them to undergo and reap the benefits of such a tool.

What are the benefits for me?

Undertaking an event like a marathon is a huge commitment and requires motivation, focus and above all a healthy mind and body. As the training volume increases many athletes have niggles, pain and injuries that result in decreased training volume, poor performance and frustration.

Functional movement screening allows us to appreciate all the ‘under cover’ training faults that lead to poor performance, discomfort and injury, that traditional forms of assessment would fail to pick up.

From the functional screening results, a complete and individual programme can be devised that addresses training errors and allows for improved performance. This will reduce the risk of injury to both recreational and elite athlete.
The Screening will take approximately 1 hour.
